Madre de Dios Conventual Church
The Madre de Dios Dominican convent is located at the top of Baena, in the center of the Almedina, between the remains of the castle and the church of Santa Maria la Mayor. It was founded by Diego Fernandez de Cordoba in 1510.
It has single nave plan and transept with adjoined chapels covered with a barrel vault with lunettes. The monastery church has two doors that open to the mentioned atrium. The first of them belonged to the original factory and was carried out in times of the Catholic Kings. The second one has classic lines, is of inferior merit and appears open from the 17th century.
The main altarpiece has Italian Renaissance style, is made from marble and bronze. It supports sixty 16th and early 17th century paintings. The paintings representing the Adoration of Shepherds and the Epiphany or The worship of the Three Kings stand out, belonging to the school of Bassano.
The choir, with Plateresque decoration lies at the feet. Its 17th century carved wood chairs are separated by balustered columns and Ionic capitals. All that is crowned by a cresting with busts of the apostles, saints and church fathers.
